Catering: Making Every Meal Feel Like Home

Today, we sit down for an interview with Shay from Rose & Bros. Catering. Rose & Bros. is a family-owned business and greatly aligns with Holo Holo’s values, including local-first practices, commitment to community, the importance of ʻohana, and being a part of something bigger.

We are stoked to be successful, long-standing partners with Rose & Bros. Catering and are proud to serve their delicious food on all of our boat charters.

Make sure to check out Rose & Bros. new brick-and-mortar location, The Lobby, in Kalaheo, Shay and Kai’s childhood town. This happening new place features made-with-love and mouth-watering breakfast options, tasty cold fridge and hot lunch items, tantalizing sweets, and all the local kine grindz you crave!

rose and bros kauaiHere’s a lil’ look into the story behind Rose & Bros. Catering, a family all about “real food, real people, real connections.”

1. When and how did Rose and Bros get started?

Rose and Bros. was a highly anticipated business for months before officially starting in early July 2019. The previous caterers had decided that they would only operate until the end of that week, and we had to jump right in.

2. What is your Mission Statement (or “the why” behind what you do)?

We do what we do because we truly love it. It’s always been more than just food for us. We love being a part of something bigger and being able to feed the community of people out here. Holo Holo Charters has blessed us with many more opportunities and inspires us to keep going and growing.

3. When did you partner with Holo Holo Charters, and why?

I guess it’s kinda a who you know, not what you know sorta thing. Chandra’s (Co-Owner & GM of Holo Holo Charters) brother is married to Kai’s (the Owner of Rose & Bros./my guy) sister. The whole reason Rose and Bros. is a thing is because of Holo Holo Charters.

We catered for a different charter for years through previous businesses, and Chandra also reached out for catering. The other charter requested that they be exclusive, meaning they would not allow us to cater to any other charter, so we had to venture off on our own and create our own business in order to grasp this opportunity. No regrets here!

A.M. charters serve breakfast and lunch. Breakfast includes fresh hot coffee and pastries that change daily. Sometimes, we have mango, coconut, or guava danishes, mini donuts, blueberry muffins, and mini cinnamon rolls. We also serve scrambled eggs topped with cheese and sautéed veggies!

Lunchtime is fun, too. We put together a build-your-own sandwich bar. We get locally baked bread from Living Foods Kauaʻi. Guests have deli meats, cheeses, all the fixings, and condiments to get creative after their snorkeling adventure. They also have fresh veggie crudités and pasta salad to snack on. For dessert, we offer coconut cookies, which we make in-house, and sugar cookies for a more standard palate.

P.M. charters are a bit shorter and are served a light pūpū and a local-style buffet dinner. We do a simple meat, cheese, and cracker platter for their snack. Dinner starts with fresh veggie crudités, sliced pineapples, and a local-style menu featuring white rice, mixed green salad with our popular lemon-herb vinaigrette, pasta salad, grilled Teriyaki chicken, Kalua pig with cabbage, and roasted tofu and veggies. For dessert, we serve a Kauaʻi coffee-infused brownie bite.

5. What sets you apart from other Kauaʻi catering companies?

What sets us apart from other companies is the love we put into our work every day. It’s important for us to be proud of what we do and not just go through the motions. I’m picky with my food, so I don’t take anything lightly. We serve quality food that we would want to eat, too. We’re passionate about our business and take care of our employees because they are passionate about it, too.

6. Do you want to tell us anything else about your company?

We are grateful every day for our partnership with Holo Holo Charters. We just celebrated our Grand Opening at The Lobby on 3/20, officially opening our doors to this wonderful journey with you all!
