-
Holo Holo Charters is widely recognized as one of the best boat tours in Kauaʻi, offering a high-quality, personalized experience on custom-built vessels designed specifically for Kauaʻi’s ocean conditions.
Our locally built fleet, experienced captains, and passionate crew create a memorable adventure rooted in safety, comfort, and authentic connection to the island. We’ve also been recognized as one of the top-rated boat tours in the United States, reflecting our commitment to delivering once-in-a-lifetime experiences on the Nāpali Coast.
-
If weather conditions may affect your tour, our Captain will clearly communicate any changes after check-in, and you can choose to reschedule or receive a full refund if it doesn’t work for you.
Safety is always our top priority. Ocean conditions in Hawaiʻi can change quickly, so our team continuously monitors forecasts and real-time conditions. If adjustments to the route or experience are needed, we believe in full transparency so you can make the best decision for your day.
-
We recommend booking your Kauaʻi boat tour as early as possible, as many Nāpali Coast tours sell out weeks in advance.
For the best experience, book your tour early in your vacation. This gives you flexibility to reschedule if weather conditions change and helps ensure availability on your preferred date.
-
All of our tours include a thoughtfully prepared pre-set menu, and we’re happy to note any dietary restrictions ahead of your tour.
While we’re unable to customize individual meals, we work closely with our caterers to offer a fresh, varied menu that typically includes options suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and those with gluten sensitivities.
We’re also happy to provide a detailed menu with allergen information so you can review in advance and feel confident in your choices. If you have specific concerns, our team is always here to help guide you.
-
Gratuity is not required, but it is always appreciated.
If you feel our crew delivered a memorable, high-quality experience, you’re more than welcome to leave a tip to say mahalo. Our team works hard to create a safe, fun, and personalized experience for every guest, and gratuities are a meaningful way to recognize their efforts.
That said, there is absolutely no expectation—your presence with us is what matters most.
-
The best Nāpali Coast boat tour depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
If snorkeling is your top priority, our Niʻihau & Nāpali Super Tour offers the best opportunity, with more time on the water and access to remote snorkeling locations. For a balance of snorkeling and sightseeing at a more relaxed pace, the Nāpali Snorkel & Sail is a great option. If you’re focused on incredible scenery and photography, our sunset tours offer some of the most beautiful lighting along the Nāpali Coast.
Every tour delivers a memorable, high-quality experience—so it really comes down to your preferences, schedule, and comfort level. If you’re unsure, our team is always happy to learn more about your group and help you choose the perfect fit.
-
Wear comfortable clothing, dress in layers, and be prepared to get wet.
For morning snorkel tours, we recommend wearing your bathing suit as a base layer, with light layers on top, to stay comfortable in the early-morning wind and sea spray. For afternoon and sunset tours, dress casually, as you may still get wet from ocean spray, rain, or waterfalls.
Conditions can change throughout the tour, so bringing a towel and a light jacket or sweater is always a good idea—especially as the sun goes down. We also highly recommend SPF or sun-protective clothing, as the ocean’s reflection can intensify sun exposure.
For your convenience, we do have a limited supply of towels, sun-protective shirts, and motion sickness medication available for purchase if needed.
The best advice? Embrace the adventure—staying completely dry on the Nāpali Coast is rarely part of the experience.
-
Our snorkel tours combine incredible Nāpali Coast sightseeing with a guided snorkeling experience.
You’ll spend much of the tour exploring Kauaʻi’s stunning coastline—sea caves, waterfalls, and remote valleys—while our crew shares local history, legends, and looks for marine life along the way. Each tour includes one snorkel stop, where you’ll typically have 30–60 minutes in the water to swim, snorkel, or relax onboard if you prefer to stay dry.
Snorkeling locations are chosen based on real-time ocean conditions to ensure the best and safest experience possible. Whether you’re in the water or enjoying the views from the boat, the day is designed to be a memorable and personalized adventure.
-
Our sunset tours offer a scenic Nāpali Coast experience with incredible views, storytelling, and a full dinner service timed around sunset.
After departing from Port Allen Harbor, we cruise along the coastline toward Nāpali, where you’ll take in panoramic views of sea cliffs, hidden beaches, waterfalls, and sea caves. As conditions allow, we get in close to the coastline so you can fully experience the details that make this area so special. Along the way, our captain and crew share local history and legends while keeping an eye out for marine life.
You’ll enjoy beverages, cocktails, and appetizers on the way out, followed by a full dinner service as we head back. We pause to take in the sunset with a champagne toast and plenty of photo opportunities throughout the tour.
For your comfort, we time our return so we’re close to the harbor at sunset and back at the dock shortly after—no extended travel in the dark. The experience is designed to be a memorable, high-quality, and easygoing way to enjoy the Nāpali Coast.
-
The main difference between our sunset tours is the vessel and overall pace of the experience.
Both tours follow the same route along the Nāpali Coast and include the same dinner, drinks, storytelling, and overall experience. The 3.5-hour Nāpali Sunset Dinner Tour is operated on Holoholo, our 65-foot powered catamaran, offering the fastest route to and from the coastline.
The 4.5-hour Nāpali Sunset Sail is operated on Leila, our 50-foot sailing catamaran. Because Leila travels at a slower pace, we allow extra time to reach the coast—and when conditions permit, we’ll raise the sails for a more traditional and relaxed sailing experience.
If you’re looking for a quicker, efficient trip, Holoholo is a great choice. If you prefer a more leisurely pace with the possibility of sailing, Leila offers a more laid-back experience.
-
Afternoon and sunset tours offer the best lighting for photographing the Nāpali Coast, thanks to the warm “golden hour” light.
During this time of day, the sun enhances the textures, colors, and depth of the cliffs, waterfalls, and coastline—making for especially dramatic and vibrant photos. Morning tours, on the other hand, are a great option if you’re hoping to capture marine life, both above and below the water.
The Nāpali Coast is breathtaking in any conditions and constantly changing, so every tour offers unique photo opportunities—you really can’t go wrong.
-
Marine life can be seen at any time of day, but morning tours often offer slightly better conditions for spotting wildlife.
In the early morning, dolphins are typically more active as they feed, while later in the morning, they tend to rest. Mornings also often bring calmer ocean conditions and better visibility, making it easier to spot dolphins, sea turtles, and tropical fish. That said, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and we regularly encounter marine life on both morning and afternoon tours.
The biggest factor is time on the water. The longer your tour, the greater your chances of wildlife encounters—which is why our Niʻihau & Nāpali Super Tour offers the highest likelihood, with extended time at sea and access to more remote areas. Seasonal humpback whales can also be seen from December through April.
No matter when you go, every tour offers the opportunity for a memorable wildlife experience.
-
No, we do not land on Niʻihau.
Niʻihau is a privately owned island, and access is restricted. On our Niʻihau & Nāpali Super Tour, you’ll have the opportunity to view portions of Niʻihau’s coastline while our crew shares history and legends about the area.
We typically snorkel at Lehua Crater, just off the coast of Niʻihau, which is known for clear water and vibrant marine life. Out of respect for the island and its native inhabitants, we do not approach or set foot on shore at any time.
This approach allows you to experience the beauty and remoteness of the area while honoring its cultural significance.
-
No, we do not make any shore landings along the Nāpali Coast.
The Nāpali Coast is remote and largely inaccessible by land, with limited and highly restricted landing areas. Our tours are designed to explore the coastline from the water, allowing you to experience sea caves, waterfalls, valleys, and cliffs up close while remaining safely offshore.
This approach preserves the natural environment and ensures a safe, high-quality experience while still giving you an unforgettable perspective of one of Kauaʻi’s most iconic landscapes.
-
The Nāpali Coast can be accessed by boat, helicopter, or hiking—there is no road access to this part of Kauaʻi.
Boat tours offer one of the most immersive ways to experience the coastline, allowing you to see sea caves, waterfalls, and towering 4,000-foot cliffs from sea level. Helicopter tours provide a breathtaking aerial perspective, while experienced hikers can access portions of the coast via the Kalalau Trail with the required permits.
You can also enjoy views from above by driving through Waimea Canyon and into Kōkeʻe State Park, where scenic overlooks provide stunning views looking down onto the Nāpali Coast.
Each perspective is unique, but exploring the coastline by boat offers a truly memorable, up-close experience you can’t get any other way.
-
We schedule an early departure to take advantage of typically calmer morning ocean conditions.
Heading up the Nāpali Coast and crossing the channel to Niʻihau and Lehua is best done before the daily trade winds build, which usually happens later in the day. Earlier departures often mean a smoother ride, better conditions for snorkeling, and an overall more enjoyable experience.
It does make for an early start, but you’ll return by mid-afternoon—leaving plenty of time to relax or enjoy the rest of your day (even if that means a well-earned nap!).
-
No, there is no road access to the Nāpali Coast.
This remote and rugged coastline can only be experienced by boat, helicopter, or hiking. Access by foot requires the full Kalalau Trail and a permit for extended hikes or camping.
Because it’s so isolated, exploring the Nāpali Coast by boat offers one of the most immersive ways to see its towering cliffs, sea caves, and waterfalls up close—making it a truly unforgettable experience.
-
The Nāpali Coast is located on the northwest shore of Kauaʻi.
This rugged and breathtaking coastline is known for its towering cliffs, deep valleys, waterfalls, and rich history and legends. Because there is no road access, it can only be experienced by boat, helicopter, hiking, or from scenic overlooks in Kōkeʻe State Park.
Each viewpoint offers something unique, but seeing the Nāpali Coast from the ocean provides an especially memorable, up-close perspective of this iconic landscape.
-
Kalalau Beach can only be accessed by hiking, kayaking (in summer conditions), or viewed by boat or helicopter—there is no road access.
The most direct way to reach the beach is via the Kalalau Trail, an 11-mile hike along the Nāpali Coast that is considered very challenging. Permits are required for hiking beyond Hanakāpīʻai and for camping, and access to the trailhead requires advance parking permits or shuttle reservations.
During the summer months, experienced kayakers may access Kalalau Beach by paddling the Nāpali Coast when ocean conditions allow. Boat and helicopter tours offer incredible views of the beach from the water or air, but landings are not permitted.
Due to safety regulations and environmental protections, it is illegal for boats to land, pick up, or drop off passengers at Kalalau Beach.
-
For safety, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours after a flight longer than 5 hours before snorkeling.
Long flights can place added stress on the body, and jumping into ocean activities too soon may increase the risk of complications such as fatigue or breathing-related issues. Taking time to rest, hydrate, and adjust after travel helps ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience in the water.
If you have any concerns, we’re always happy to talk through your plans and help you choose the best timing for your tour.

Snorkeling takes place in the open ocean at locations chosen for the best and safest conditions each day.
We typically anchor 50–150 yards offshore, and guests enter from a swim platform at the back of the catamaran, with easy steps or a ladder to return onboard. All snorkel gear is provided, including prescription masks, and most tours include 30–60 minutes in the water.
Conditions can vary daily based on swell, currents, and visibility, and your Captain will always select the best possible spot. On our Niʻihau & Nāpali Super Tour, snorkeling often takes place in remote, less-traveled areas with exceptional clarity and abundant marine life—offering some of the best conditions in Hawaiʻi.
-
Yes—all snorkel gear is included at no additional cost.
We provide masks, snorkels, and fins for every guest, along with prescription masks for those who need corrective lenses (ranging from +1.5 to -7.0). We also carry snorkel equipment for kids.
Our goal is to make your experience easy and comfortable, so you can focus on enjoying your time in the water.
-
Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own snorkel gear, as long as it is a traditional mask and snorkel set.
For safety reasons, full-face snorkel masks are not permitted on our tours. While they’ve become more popular, certain designs have raised safety concerns, and we prioritize using equipment that allows for safe and reliable breathing in open ocean conditions.
We’re happy to provide high-quality snorkel gear for you, and our crew will ensure everything fits comfortably so you can enjoy your time in the water with confidence.
-
We provide snorkel vests and flotation aids, but not traditional life jackets for snorkeling.
Life jackets are designed to keep your head above water, which can make snorkeling difficult. Instead, we offer snorkel vests and swim noodles to help support guests who are comfortable in the water but may want extra buoyancy. Our crew is also there to guide and assist you throughout the experience.
For safety reasons, snorkeling in the open ocean requires basic swimming ability. If you are not comfortable swimming, we recommend enjoying the experience from onboard, where you’ll still have incredible views of the coastline and marine life.
Your safety is always our top priority, and we’re here to help you have the best possible experience in a way that feels comfortable for you.
-
No, we do not allow feeding fish during our tours.
Feeding marine life can disrupt their natural behaviors and impact the balance of the ecosystem. We’re committed to protecting the ocean environment and keeping wildlife interactions as natural as possible.
By observing without interfering, we help preserve these ecosystems so they can continue to thrive for future generations—and for you to experience them as they’re meant to be.
-
No, swimming with dolphins is not allowed.
It is illegal to approach or swim with dolphins under federal law, as these protections are in place to prevent disruption to their natural behaviors. While we love encountering dolphins on our tours, we observe them respectfully from a distance and never pursue them.
On rare occasions, if you are already in the water snorkeling and dolphins choose to approach you on their own, that can happen—but it’s entirely up to them.
We follow responsible wildlife viewing guidelines and are committed to protecting marine life. Research has shown that increased human interaction can disrupt feeding, resting, and natural behaviors, so our approach is to let wildlife remain wild.
Respecting these boundaries helps ensure these incredible animals can thrive for generations to come.
-
For safety reasons, guests must be comfortable swimming to participate in snorkeling.
Our snorkel locations are in the open ocean, typically in water over 10 feet deep, where you cannot stand, and conditions can change. Because of this, it’s not a safe environment for non-swimmers, even with flotation aids.
If you’re not comfortable swimming, you’re still very welcome to join the tour and enjoy the experience from onboard—taking in the incredible scenery, marine life, and overall adventure.
Your safety is always our top priority, and we want every guest to feel comfortable and confident during their time with us.
-
Kauaʻi’s ocean water stays comfortable year-round, typically ranging from about 74°F to 80°F (23–27°C).
Most guests find the water refreshing but very swimmable, especially on warmer days. That said, comfort levels can vary, and some guests may feel cooler depending on conditions like wind or time spent in the water.
We do not provide wetsuits, so if you tend to get cold easily, you’re welcome to bring your own for added comfort.
-
No, we do not offer scuba diving—our tours are focused on snorkeling and sightseeing.
Our experiences are designed to maximize time exploring the Nāpali Coast above and in the water at a relaxed pace, which is different from the structure of a dedicated scuba diving trip.
For guests interested in scuba diving, we recommend booking with a local dive operator who specializes in that experience. This allows you to get the most out of your time underwater while we focus on delivering a memorable, high-quality snorkeling and sightseeing adventure.
-
Our cancellation policy depends on your group size.
For parties of 9 or fewer, we require at least 24 hours’ notice for a full refund. For parties of 10 or more, we require 72 hours’ notice. Cancellations made outside of these timeframes will receive a full refund.
Within the cancellation window, reservations are non-refundable and charged in full.
If you have any questions or need assistance, our team is always here to help.
-
Yes—if we cancel your tour due to weather, you will receive a full refund.
Ocean conditions, such as wind and swell, are the primary factors that may lead to a cancellation or route adjustment. If conditions require a change to the route or experience, our Captain will clearly communicate this at check-in, and you’ll have the option to continue, reschedule, or receive a full refund.
We do not cancel tours due to rain alone unless there are safety concerns, such as thunder and lightning. It’s common for it to be raining on land while conditions remain clear out on the water.
Our goal is to be transparent and give you the information you need to make the best decision for your day.
-
For safety reasons, we do not allow expectant mothers on our tours.
Nāpali Coast tours take place in the open ocean, often more than two hours from emergency assistance. Conditions can be unpredictable, with movement, sea spray, and the potential for a rough ride. Seasickness is also more common during pregnancy and can lead to dehydration, which may pose risks for both mom and baby.
While we take every precaution to ensure a safe experience, there are simply too many variables in this environment for us to feel comfortable operating with expectant mothers onboard—regardless of the stage of pregnancy.
We truly appreciate your understanding, and we hope to welcome you aboard for a memorable adventure in the future.
-
Yes—children ages 5 and older are welcome to join all of our tours.
Nāpali Coast adventures can be physically demanding, with ocean movement, wind, and long durations on the water. For younger children, these conditions can be uncomfortable and may increase the risk of motion sickness and dehydration.
We’ve also found that the adventurous nature of our tours is best suited for guests who can fully enjoy and engage with the experience.
If you’re traveling with younger children, we recommend arranging care for the day so you can relax and take in the experience to the fullest—we’d love to welcome your whole group when the timing is right.
-
If you miss your scheduled check-in time, your reservation will be charged in full.
Our tours operate on strict departure schedules, and we’re unable to hold the boat for late arrivals out of respect for all guests and safety timelines. We strongly recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to ensure a smooth check-in process.
If you do miss your tour and would like to reschedule, we’ll always do our best to accommodate you on another day, based on availability, for a small rescheduling fee.
-
No, children are not required to wear a life vest while onboard.
Our vessels are designed with safety in mind, including secure railings and stable layouts to help prevent accidental falls. We also carry all required U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets onboard for emergency use.
If you feel more comfortable having your child wear a flotation device during the tour, you’re welcome to bring a water-sports–style vest, which is generally more comfortable for movement.
Our goal is to provide a safe, relaxed environment for all guests, and we’re always here to help you choose what feels best for your family.
-
Yes, service animals are welcome on our tours.
Because we operate in an open ocean environment, there are a few important considerations. Animals can experience motion sickness just like humans, and conditions may include vessel movement, narrow walkways, and limited space. We also do not have designated relief areas onboard, which can be important depending on the length of the tour.
For safety, service animals must remain under the handler’s control at all times, and we ask that you consider how the animal and leash may impact movement for both your party and others onboard.
We kindly ask that you let us know at the time of booking if you’ll be bringing a service animal. This allows our team to review the tour details with you and ensure the best possible experience for both you and your animal.
-
Yes, guests with pacemakers or defibrillators are welcome on our tours.
Nāpali Coast adventures take place in an open ocean environment, which can involve vessel movement and changing conditions. For your comfort and safety, we recommend discussing any medical conditions, recent injuries, or special considerations with our team prior to your tour.
This allows us to help ensure the experience is a good fit and that you feel confident and prepared for the day.
-
No, drones are not permitted on our tours.
Operating a drone from a moving vessel creates safety risks for passengers and crew, and drones can be easily lost or damaged over the ocean. In addition, many areas we visit—including the Nāpali Coast—have strict regulations that prohibit drone use without special permits.
Underwater drones are also not allowed, as they can disrupt marine life and pose a risk to guests in the water.
Our tours are designed to provide a safe, relaxed, and immersive experience for everyone onboard, and we appreciate your understanding.
-
Yes, all of our vessels are equipped with onboard restrooms.
Our marine heads are compact but fully functional, providing what you need while out on the water.
-
Yes, our vessels offer shaded seating within the cabin area.
The cabin is open on one side to allow for airflow, helping keep the space comfortable while still providing protection from the sun.
We recommend coming prepared with reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and sun-protective clothing, as parts of the tour will be exposed to direct sunlight. We also offer complimentary reef-safe sunscreen onboard for you to use.
-
We operate barefoot on our vessels to provide the best traction and maintain a clean, comfortable deck for all guests.
Our boats are designed with non-skid surfaces, and going barefoot offers the safest grip while moving around onboard. Before boarding, we’ll collect your footwear and return it immediately after the tour.
In certain cases, exceptions may be made for medical reasons. If you need to keep your footwear on, please let us know at the time of booking or check-in so you can speak directly with the Captain. Accommodations are handled on a case-by-case basis and may include remaining seated during portions of the tour for safety.
-
Yes, all of our vessels carry U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets for emergency use.
These personal flotation devices (PFDs) are designed for safety in emergency situations and are not intended to be worn during normal operation or snorkeling.
If you prefer to wear a flotation device during the tour, you’re welcome to bring your own water-sports–style vest for added comfort.
-
Our vessels are among the fastest on Kauaʻi, but speed always depends on ocean conditions and safety.
Our Captain will adjust speed based on conditions to ensure a smooth and safe experience for everyone onboard.
- Holoholo (65’ power catamaran): Cruises at 20–23 knots, with a top speed of around 27 knots
- Leila (50’ sailing catamaran): Cruises at 15–18 knots under motor power (up to 20 knots), and up to 15 knots when sailing
This balance of speed and comfort allows us to efficiently reach the Nāpali Coast while still delivering a high-quality, enjoyable ride.
-
If you’re prone to motion sickness—or unsure—it’s best to take preventative medication before your tour.
There are many over-the-counter and natural options available, and some should be taken a few hours in advance, so be sure to follow the directions. We also offer motion sickness remedies for purchase at check-in if needed.
If you begin to feel unwell during the tour, let our crew know right away—early intervention makes a big difference. We can help reposition you on the boat and provide items like ginger ale, crackers, and ginger candy to help ease symptoms.
To prepare, we recommend getting a good night’s rest and avoiding alcohol or acidic drinks (like coffee or orange juice) before your tour, as these can make symptoms worse.
-
If you experience severe seasickness, a Nāpali Coast boat tour may not be the best fit.
Our tours take place in the open ocean, where conditions can vary and movement is part of the experience—even on calm days. While many guests manage well with preventive medication, it’s not guaranteed, and tours range from 3 to 7 hours, with no option to return early due to seasickness.
If you do choose to join us, we strongly recommend taking preventative medication in advance and selecting the tour that best fits your comfort level. Our vessels are custom-built for Kauaʻi’s conditions and designed for stability, but every individual responds differently.
We want you to have the best possible experience, and for some guests, that may mean choosing an alternative way to explore the Nāpali Coast, such as by air or from scenic overlooks.
