Hidden Gems of Kauaʻi

With Kauaʻi being less hustle-and-bustle, it can often feel like secluded beaches, quiet trails, and breathtaking views are waiting to be discovered around every corner. Visitors always hope to enjoy the island as the locals do, so we’ve collected some hidden gems to check out while on Kauaʻi. Experiences, views, and food all play a part in the hidden treasures found here on the Garden Isle. Enjoy!

SCENIC STOPS

With one major highway on the island, you can drive the entirety of Kauaʻi in a day (although we recommend taking a few days to stop and smell the plumeria!) A fun way to enjoy the sights en route to another adventure is the classic pullover photo op at scenic overlooks. Plans to see the heavy hitters like Waimea Canyon and Wailua Falls are in every tourist handbook, but here are some lesser-known gems along the way:

  • Kīlauea Lighthouse – NORTH – A quick turn off on the way to Hanalei Bay, and well worth the pit stop. Proper tours will restart at the end of May 2025, but views from the parking lot are great as well!
  • ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls – EAST – View the falls from above from the conveniently located lookout, equipped with bathrooms and picnic tables, should you decide to stay for a while.
  • Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail – SOUTH – No time for the full coastal hike? Take a 5-10 minute walk up from Shipwreck’s Beach to enjoy a view of the southside from the cliffs of Poʻipū.
  • Hanapēpē Swinging Bridge – WEST – An easy walk from Hanapēpē Town with views of the Hanapēpē River.

BEACHES

  • Baby Beach – SOUTH – Tucked in a little neighborhood in Poʻipū. Calm waters and adorable tidepools for the littles.
  • Maha’ulepu Beach – SOUTH – Miles of undisturbed beach and a hot spot for kite-surfers as well as monk seals.
  • Polihale (Queen’s Pond) – WEST – Summer is the best time to catch “Queen’s Pond,” a natural pool caused by the tides and formation of the sandbar.

Tahiti nui luauGRINDS

Trying the local fare is an absolute must while exploring Kauaʻi. The fish is always fresh, the produce and most meat are locally sourced, and the melting pot of ethnicities makes for a food adventure. Here are a few “off the beaten path” authentically Kauaʻi spots to check out:

Pono Market – Kapaʻa – Arguably the BEST poke bowl on the island

Mark’s Place – Puhi – Classic Hawaiian favorites, plate lunches, and delectable desserts

Puka Dogs – Poʻipū – A one-of-a-kind Hawaiian-style hot dog. You won’t want to miss this.

Tahiti Nui – This Hanalei staple is the old-standing lūʻau on the island.

Aloha ʻĀina Juice – Līhuʻe – Aloha ʻāina means “love the land,” and boy, do they. They are locally sourcing ingredients and work with farmers to provide healthy options to the community. Stop by for a fresh juice, an acai bowl, or one of their other fresh offerings.

Enjoy exploring all the sights, sounds, and tastes of Kauaʻi! Any questions? Reach out to our team for recommendations!
