Kauai Family Friendly Vacation Ideas

Kauai is an excellent destination for a family vacation. It’s laid back, it’s safe and there are plenty of kid-friendly activities to enjoy, on top of simply going to the beach. Here are some ideas for your family vacation on Kauai.

Napali Coast Tours

First suggestion is that, in the spirit of being more connected and intentional about where our food comes from, you take the fam to Kilohana Plantation in Lihue and take a step back in time on their Plantation Railway Tour. It’s all aboard their beautiful mahogany train cars and off on a narrated tour of this fruitful, picturesque, and historic property. On the ride, you’ll learn about the missionary/sugar baron family that started the plantation in 1864, the immigrants who came to work the contracts, and you’ll develop an understanding of how Hawaii’s sugar boom shaped our culture and language. You’ll stop and feed the goats and pigs and sometimes they even let you pick your own fruit too. At Kilohana you’ll see banana, papaya, guava, Mac nuts, mango, avo, etc. How fun is that for the young ’uns? There’s also an impressive luau at Kilohana Plantation that you might want to check out if a luau is on your Kauai family vacation itinerary.

The second suggestion is that you hit up Anaina Hou Community Park, in Kilauea, for their mini-golf course, big playground, fire shows, food trucks, farmers markets, and community events. The Par 47, 18-hole mini-golf course is like no other, because it’s built-in a tropical botanical garden! You’ll be putt-putting amongst some of the flashiest tropical species around, such as rose grapes, ginger, and jade plant. Fun fact: this gorgeous north shore property was donated to the Kauai community by Bill Porter, the guy that founded E-Trade! Give their website a visit as you’re planning your Kauai family vacation.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Pool

Our third suggestion—Pool Day at the Kauai Grand Hyatt– is a suggestion of which you could ask—is this really more for the kids or more for the parents? Indeed, there’s a little something for everyone at Pool Day at the Hyatt and the fabulous news is that you don’t have to be staying at this luxurious south shore property to experience it—they sell day passes! The littles can splish-splash their hearts out in the lazy river and on the 150-ft waterslide while mom and dad enjoy the saltwater lagoon, the Jacuzzis, food and drink service, beach access, and WIFI. The Hyatt also offers a day pass for their Anara Spa, so if one of the parents is feeling generous, they can watch the kiddos and send their better half up to enjoy the steam room, relaxation lounge, fitness classes, and all the various other spa amenities. Options.

And our fourth and final recommendation for family-friendly Kauai activities is our Holo Holo Charters Napali Snorkel Sail tour. To be fair, all of our Kauai boat tours are fun and appropriate for the whole fam (over 5 yrs old), but the Napali Snorkel Sail stands out as an especially family-friendly option. The exciting excursion is action-packed—we’re seeing dolphins and turtles and whales, we’re learning Kauai history, hearing local legend, we’re snorkeling with tropical fish species, we’re sailing across the ocean! Breakfast and lunch are included, so there are two meals mom and dad don’t have to worry about—how great is that?—and adult beverages are served as well, just saying. This 5-hour ocean adventure is affordably priced and so much fun in the sun, the kiddos will be all tuckered out in the afternoon and the p’s might just get a nap in. Win-win!
